Criteria for Apostle

One significant difference is that the Apostles were called personally by Jesus into that office. The evangelist while certainly having a call from God we cannot say it's personal. Also the evangelist primary goal is to preach the gospel. The Apostles did that but they were tasked with giving the revelation of God to the church, which is how we get our New Testament. A good story to read is Phillips story in Acts 8:4-40 While Timothy is asked to do the work of an evangelist, Phillip was an Evangelist and is the only one described in the Bible as having that office, so he is a great place to start in order to understand what an evangelist is.
